XIV MCP

Approvals in the game

The approval window, and standing approvals for jobs that buy repeatedly.

Some actions are never decided by your assistant alone:

  • buying with anything other than gil,
  • recalling a running venture,
  • completing a trade with another player, with what both sides hold,
  • and anything set to Ask, whether a module of XIV MCP or a capability of a third-party plugin.

They open an approval window in the game, and nothing happens until you answer.

The approval window

A call set to Ask waits for your answer before anything happens.
The approval window, asking whether to allow a tool call, with approve and decline buttons
The approval window says who asks, what for, and with which arguments.
  • Who asks: your assistant, or a named plugin.
  • What: the tool, what it wants to do and its arguments. The window is highlighted by risk.
  • Your answer: approve once, approve for this session (that tool is approved until the game or XIV MCP restarts), always allow (which sets the setting to Allow), or decline. For a third-party action that cannot be undone, the window asks every time and only offers once.
  • No answer within two minutes counts as declined.
  • You notice it even in another window: the game's taskbar button flashes while an approval waits.

A plugin can also ask in the middle of a call, with the real numbers, such as "Buy 3 Hi-Potions for 1,200 gil".

One buy_item call asks once, for the whole quantity, even when it buys in several batches of 99. Buying the same item again in a new call asks again.

Standing approvals

For jobs that buy repeatedly, a standing approval asks once: "spend up to this much of this currency (on these items, for this long)". Your assistant asks for it with request_spending_approval, and later purchases with buy_item use it without asking again.

  • The question stays up for five minutes. Your assistant doesn't wait that long: it gets an answer within 20 seconds, either yours or "still waiting", and checks list_approvals later. Until you approve, nothing can be bought with it; a declined or unanswered one never becomes usable.
  • Its time ("for this long") starts when you approve it.
  • Every purchase under it counts its real cost, measured from your currency balance.
  • It stops when the approved amount is used up.
  • It stops if a purchase turns out to be paid with another currency.

Active approvals are listed in /xivmcp → Jobs, with what has been spent and what is left, and a Revoke button. Your assistant can also list them (list_approvals) and revoke them (revoke_approval).
